The Adelaide Oval is home to several sporting teams in South Australia, including the AFL’s Adelaide Crows and Port Adelaide, along with The South Australian Cricket Association’s Adelaide Strikers, Redbacks and Scorpions.
Project Description and Solution
Programmed Electrical Technologies (Programmed) has implemented various projects for the Adelaide Oval over the years. These include a redevelopment of their communications infrastructure, LED lighting upgrades and the implementation of a player tracking system.
When the Adelaide Oval built two new grandstands, Programmed’s expertise in communications infrastructure was responsible for ensuring the exciting moments of each event held at the stadium would be projected with absolute clarity. This involved installing a Systimax Category 6A cabling system consisting of 5,000 copper outlets to carry voice and data services throughout the new stands. This installation would also support other services like IPTV, CCTV, BMS, access and lighting control, point of sale and turnstile entry devices. At the project’s completion, Programmed had installed close to 50 kilometres of single-mode fibre-optic cable linked over 40 floor distributors back to a data centre.
We were then contracted to undertake LED lighting upgrades to stadium sports lighting as well as supply power and communication to the electronic advertising screens that surround the oval.
For this complete design and construct LED lighting project, Programmed had to work effectively and collaboratively with multiple stakeholders. With the lighting to be replaced a whopping 40 meters high from the ground and located on the far edge of the grandstand canopies, detailed planning and care was necessary. Utilising a combination of 125 feet-high boom lifts and swing stages to safely access the existing fittings, we successfully met the project’s rigorous requirements; in addition to delivering it within extremely tight budget constraints.
More recently, Programmed installed a state-of-the-art player tracking system at the oval. Known as Match Day Vision, the system captures and relays on-field activity in real time, allowing sporting coaches and team staff to analyse the performance and positioning of every player throughout a game. The system also provides the opportunity for new informative broadcast graphics to educate viewers on tactical and other athletic aspects of the game.
For this, we mounted a tracking cameras behind each goal and four strategically placed antennas around the oval. To enable connectivity to identified locations within the Adelaide Oval so coaches and team staff could view close-ups and isolated vision of players and their movements on the field, we further installed several kilometres of fibre-optic and copper cabling.
With each project, regular meetings with the Adelaide Oval ensured Programmed gained a clear understanding of each project’s requirements and expected outcomes. Underpinning this was a combination of specialist capabilities, broad experience and a strong safety focus. These made certain we delivered a robust solution for cutting-edge communications technology responsible for many of this world-class venue’s key operational functions.
